| Humidifier Benefits If you live north of the Mason Dixon line and you don’t have a whole house humidifier you are losing money on your fuel bills, spending more money on doctor bills and will find yourself more chilled and uncomfortable than you need to be. Cold air cannot hold as much moisture as warm air. You know this is true. That is why it is so humid in the summer when it is warm. When the air is cooled it condenses or rains or dries out. Same things happen in winter only more so. Here are more detailed explanations of why you need a humidifier. Your skin is porous and allows moisture to leave thru those pores. You could say your skin breathes. When that moisture on your skin is exposed to a dry air it rapidly evaporates and that causes your skin to cool and you become chilled. If you don’t believe it, blow across a dry finger. Now wet the finger and blow again. See how much cooler your finger feels when it is wet. The blowing across your wet finger causes the moisture to evaporate quickly and cools it. The same thing happens when your skin comes in contact with dry air. The moisture evaporates, and you become chilled and uncomfortable. Just raising the humidity from as low as 5% when it is 0 outside to 25 to 30% makes a huge difference. You feel chilled in the dry air and you either need to put on a sweater or you reach for the thermostat to turn up the heat. If you had a humidifier you wouldn’ t feel the need to do either and you might even be able to turn down your thermostat from your normal setting a degree or two lower. That is money in the bank. For every degree you can lower your thermostat you gain about a 1% decrease in your heating fuel cost. When the outside air temp starts dropping the actual humidity in the air goes down too. All that dry air comes into the house and you breathe and are immersed in it. Here are the reasons it is unhealthy for you. It dries out your nose, mouth, throat, and lungs and creates an environment that is ideal for bacteria and virus to collect and breed and make you sick. Normally the mucus membranes would generate enough fluid to slough off those germs but since it is all dried up it can’t do that. Humid air keeps you healthy and the doctor away. Dry air also leaves your skin dry and itchy. You slather on moisture and skin products throughout the winter to alleviate the discomfort. A humidifier will help that and reduce the money spent on skin care products. I sell and install Aprilaire products ( www.aprilaire.com) This is their only business and they have been in the business for such a long time. They are the true pioneers of humidity control. I like their bypass manual models 500 and 600 the best. Those two have the least maintenance issues (a single solenoid valve to control water flow). When they clog up ( and they will, they all do) they have replacement orifices available. I don’t trust their digital models yet or anybodies digital models for that matter. I sell Honeywell and General models also but only if the customers asks for them. I charge $425 and up for these models. The two models are the small unit (less than 2500 sq.ft. house) and more than 2500 sq.ft. If your system requires a power type 120 volt fan humidifier (700 series) then the price is about $100 more. Call for a quote. I do not recommend any humidifier that uses steam or mist injection. These work well initially but they are 2 to 3 times the expense and they clog up easily. |
